Life in the blogosphere

Why is it that I know what this woman’s children eat for breakfast, what kind of pajamas they wear on Christmas and where she goes on vacation but I’ve never actually met her? The simple answer is: I read her blog. I didn’t realize until this morning how much I rely on the normalcy of other peoples’ lives through their blogs as part of my own daily life. Each day, rather than reading the newspaper, I check on two of my favorite scrapbooking gals’ blogs. Miss Cathy Z is always good for a good laugh and some awesomely clean and simple designs. I thoroughly enjoyed her class, Me: The Abridged Version, you can see here the fun I had with that. Ali never ceases to amaze me in keeping up with her Project Life on a timely basis as well as several other major projects throughout the year, such as December Daily and Week in the Life. I love how they are both so open and honest about the everyday things in their life. You can see my Project Life, December Daily and Week in the Life projects here (I actually have a full week documented on the Week in the Life project that I just realized I never posted, I’ll get to that soon).

I was surprised at my reaction this morning when I read Ali’s post that she and her husband are divorcing. Again, I’ve never met her in person, but she has inspired me to do so many things with my scrapbooks that I feel connected to her in some strange way. It makes me sad for her kids that their lives’ are going to be changed in so many ways and it makes me feel just a little bit luckier today that all is good on my side of the world.

December Daily is finally done!

I am so excited that I actually finished this project! It was a great journey and I think I may actually do it again next year. Giving myself the flexibility to do 0-4 pages per day was awesome. Sometimes a few days would pass without anything spectacular to note and other times I found it hard to get everything on a two page spread. I’ve already uploaded and ordered my book from Shutterfly and it should arrive sometime after the 19th, so most likely by the time you read this it will be in my hot little hands.
Hats off to Ali Edwards (www.aliedwards.com) for hosting this wonderful project and bravo for her for keeping up with it day by day to keep us motivated!
I wonder what I’ll do next?

December Daily: Closing Page

 2010 DD Day 26b

2010 DD cover back

I thoroughly enjoyed this holiday season. We were able to celebrate with family and friends. We enjoyed great treats, good company and cool presents. We had snow and snuggles, shopping and wrapping, giving and receiving. We were reminded many times how fortunate we are and are very thankful for the people we have around us to celebrate the holidays and the “everydays” with. Although we seem to live in a world where it’s ‘never enough’, this holiday season felt Just Right. Another successful and happy holiday season has come and gone. Let the giving continuing throughout the year. Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night!

December Daily: Day 25

There may end up being more than one two page layout for the actual day of Christmas since we have so many great family photos. We celebrated Christmas in NY with my side of the family and lots of fun was had and as you can tell by the pictures, loads o’ presents as well. Keep in mind there were 13 people to share the loot, but I assure you every single one of us were spoiled!

December Daily: Day 20

This is the day….finally the Christmas lights get put up. They have already come down, but it was nice to see them twinkling when I’d pull in the driveway at night.
2010 DD Day 20 2pg
Journaling reads:
We all attended Bryce’s Boy Scout Court of Honor where he received two new merit badges as well as a patch for the Camporee he participated in. We spent some time with Dad & Marti to exchanging Christmas cheer. Keith then surprised us by taking us to see some really awesome Christmas lights!
Hurry up and string the lights Christmas is only 5 days away!
Yes, it is the 20th and we are finally getting some Christmas lights outside. The inside has been decorated since Thanksgiving so we are very much in the Christmas spirit. Lights outside are hubby’s thing - so if I have to wait until the 20th every year I guess that will just have to be good enough. The kids love decorating outside with Keith so it was worth the wait.

December Daily: Day 19

My Smiley mug bit the dust :-(

2010 12 15_0207 How lucky am I to have a friend that takes note that my favorite coffee cup bit the dust and buys me a new one? Pretty darn lucky I’d say!

2010 DD Day 19

Journaling reads:

After the demise of my happy Smiley mug, my sweet friend Katherine bought me this Minnie mug from Disney to make my morning coffee smiley again. Lady is very happy with her new doggie bed and I finally finished my wrapping. It’s a good day to be me :-)

December Daily: Day 18

2010 DD Day 18

Journaling reads:

My friend Julie got us tickets to go see the Navy Christmas concert in DC. We went as a family (some begrungingly), but we ended up having a good time. Summer and I loved the concert and want to go again but I don’t think the ‘boys’ will be joining us. After the concert the kids thought it was funny that we got hot snacks from an ice cream truck.

December Daily: Day 17

The making of the “Man Cave”. For Christmas I repurposed my husband’s office (since he no longer works at home) and made it into an escape for him. It’s been so frustrating for all of us when, at the end of a long day, he just wants to chill in front of the TV and I’m still trying to wrap up homework with the kids. They are easily distracted and our living room TV is in direct view of their ‘homework spot’. Now they can concentrate, and he can relax and I don’t have to feel guilty about telling him to turn off the TV. It’s a total win-win situation!

2010 DD Day 17 2 pg

Check out the before and after video! Since we spent the holidays away from home, I had to show him this video to show him what his present was. He was even more floored when we came home and he got to see it in person. Now I have to make appointments to see him!

Journaling reads:

Keith works so hard to take care of all of us that I wanted to make sure he had a special Christmas present so he knows how much he is appreciated. I made him a “Man Cave” complete with recliner, TV & a mini-fridge! It turned this drab office into a place for him to escape and relax either to study or to chill out. Either way he deserves it!

December Daily: Day 16

2010 DD Day 16 2 pg

Journaling reads:

In true Christmas tradition we Harrington girls went to the mall and shopped til we dropped....literally. The ornaments were so pretty and we got enough snow to cancel school (which doesn’t require much :-)

So thankful for snow! The first snow day of the year, just in time to get ready for Christmas break. It’s funny how when I took this photo I just wanted to capture one of the kids in the snow, and now as I look at it there is so much more. Summer is wearing a hat from Bryce Resort, which is where our son Bryce got his name (Keith’s granddad had built a ski house up there that we used to visit pre-kids). She is also wearing a well- worn and well-loved fighter pilot jacket that has been passed down in the Harrington family. (Proud pilots & proud military heritage). Everyone thought since Bryce was the youngest boy that it would stop there - but alas my little princess tom-boy wears it every day!

December Daily: Day 13

This Christmas was bittersweet. We managed to keep the ‘magic’ alive for our 8 year old but I think this may be the last year of official believing. Waauugghh :-(

2010 DD Day 13

Journaling reads:

Summer was extremely excited to receive a personal video message from the big guy himself. Exactly what we needed
to keep the magic alive for this Christmas! The snow always makes our neighborhood look so pretty and is getting us in
the mood for the holiday.

December Daily: Day 12

I am loving how this whole project is coming together. I’m a little bit behind but getting caught up and plan to finish soon. :-)

2010 DD Day 12

Journaling reads:

Christmas just wouldn’t be complete without watching some of the well-loved Christmas specials. Fortunately for me, Summer shares my love of Christmas specials. We’ve watched one just about every night. My personal favorite is the one with Heat Miser and Snow Miser, we’ve watched that one several times already!

December Daily: Day 9

Moving along, getting some pages done. Love the holiday season but breathing a sigh of relief that the wonderful craziness is behind us. So looking forward to wonderful things in 2011. Happy New Year to All!

Had a great time in NY with my family, more to come on that soon :-)

December Daily: Day 5

I realize that December is nearly over and I’m only posting Day 5, but better late than never. I’ll keep them coming until I feel I have had enough. Hope your holidays were very Merry!

This page documents a Progressive Dinner with friends, if you haven’t tried it you should, it’s fun! Basically each family makes one course of the meal and everyone travels from house to house to enjoy the courses. It was a great way to lighten the load on each hostess and there was certainly plenty of food!

Journaling reads:

We had our first “Progressive Dinner” and it was quite an entertaining evening. We started at our house with appetizers and Bellinis. Katherine had the great idea to get family photos in front of the tree. Since I wasn’t the one behind the camera nor the one requesting the photo, everyone seems to be smiling just perfectly. It’s too bad I had already ordered my Christmas cards or this quite possibly might have gone to the top of the pile. We continued on to Julie’s for a delicious roast and rice dinner, and then to Katherine’s for dessert complete with poinsettia punch. It was a fun evening and we were all pleasantly exhausted by the end.
Fortunately, Summer started feeling better by the afternoon as she was a little pekid earlier in the day so Lady kept her company and tried to make her feel better.

December Daily: Days 6, 7 & 8

Finally got my Christmas cards out in the mail. Summer was a great help, she labeled, stuffed and stamped most of the cards, including the ones I sent out for my sister Karen. We also received some great chocolate covered strawberries from my other sister Danielle.

December Daily: Day 4

Journaling reads:
On our way out of town to go to Keith’s Christmas party in Roanoke we passed the newly finished overpass at Mary Wash – I still find it more than slightly amusing that I ended up living in my college town!  Taking pictures on the way to Roanoke, we saw a speed limit sign that said 70 miles per hour,  Keith said he had never seen one and neither had I so of course I had to take a picture. Since he was driving and I had just gotten my new laptop, I wanted to document me happily scrapbooking the whole way, hence the picture of my reflection in the laptop. Once we went over the mountains it started snowing like crazy… almost total white out conditions, so weird! The mountains were so pretty to see, very nice views from the road in every direction. It was a very relaxing and quiet trip with no kids on board.  Since we were alone, I had to set up the timer to take a picture of us – we had such a good time hanging out alone together, it was the first time in a very  long time and it was wonderful.  The lobby of the Hotel Roanoke was amazingly decorated in all reds and golds with multiple Christmas trees all around, the snow falling outside was just icing on the cake. We saw a cool train roundtable which my Dad would love so Keith stopped so I could get close ups of the engines. We even stopped at a scenic overlook on the way home. Although we were only gone for a little over 24 hours, it was a wonderful re-charge for both of us.

December Daily: Day 3

Only one page for today, apparently my daughter has inherited my taste for chocolate – uh, oh.

Journaling reads:

Summer was so excited when the decorations finally came out. She has been wearing that Santa hat for days and it is only the 3rd of December! She is definitely my “sweet tooth” kid and begged for an advent calendar of her own so that she could eat chocolate everyday. Of course, I got Bryce one too and he immediately put it somewhere Summer couldn’t reach. Right now these two butt heads quite a bit, but someday I know they will be the best of friends. Ironically, when I mentioned making an advent calendar, my crafty girl said “no thanks” but Bryce wants to. They continue to surprise me.
